Who Is an Ideal Candidate for Laser Skin Resurfacing?
People frequently ask our team: “Who is the ideal patient for laser therapy?” Our Los Angeles-based board-certified and cosmetic fellowship-trained dermatologists at Skin Care and Laser Physicians of Beverly Hills know that it can sometimes be difficult for patients to determine which type of cosmetic treatment is best suited for their goals.
First, it’s important to know that every decision will be made with the guidance of an experienced physician who will work with you to assess your skin and understand your goals before recommending a plan.
That said, here’s a closer look at what laser skin resurfacing actually is and how it works:
Laser skin resurfacing is ideal for patients who want their skin to look as clear as possible. Treatments target various types of skin imperfections, handling them faster and more effectively when compared to topical treatments used in at-home skincare routines.
Lasers utilize light and heat to enhance the tone and texture of the skin. Many cause controlled, uniform injuries to the skin, which trigger a healing response. This is what improves the overall appearance of the skin. New skin is created, and the body produces more collagen that provides structure, firmness, and a frame for moisture-loving hyaluronic acid.
Laser skin resurfacing can be an excellent choice for many patients and greatly boost their confidence. We will evaluate each patient on a case-by-case basis to determine whether they would be a good candidate, since everyone’s situation is different.
There are several factors we evaluate when deciding whether a patient is a good candidate for lasers, including their skin condition, texture, and thickness. Typically, ideal candidates for laser skin surfacing are those who:
- Have skin imperfections such as scars from acne or chickenpox, uneven skin pigmentation, birthmarks, age spots, liver spots, sun damage, non-responsive skin after a facelift, fine lines or wrinkles around the eyes, forehead, or mouth, or enlarged oil glands on the nose
- Are in good health
- Have good skin elasticity
- Have a non-oily complexion
- Have light to medium skin tone
- Have light or moderate wrinkles or blemishes
- Have realistic expectations about the effects laser skin resurfacing will have for their skin
Patients who have very dark skin tones, active acne, deep wrinkles, stretch marks, and excessive or sagging skin may not always be good candidates for laser skin resurfacing treatments and would benefit more from other strategies.
