Why Would I Need Voluma® XC?
As we age, our face loses fat and becomes hollow, which leads to sagging skin and a less youthful appearance. This may be particularly apparent in those with an active lifestyle and lean body mass.

Why Does Skin Change?
Youthful skin is marked by the presence of a range of beneficial proteins, sugars, and other elements. While these are maintained through an ongoing cycle of breakdown and renewal throughout a person’s younger years, this process starts to slow as time goes by. Eventually, the complex sugar known as hyaluronic acid and the versatile protein known as collagen leave faster than they are replenished in the skin, creating volume loss that leads to sagging, flattening, and the formation of wrinkles. While this is happening, people also tend to gradually lose the subcutaneous fat in their face, which keeps angles from looking harsh and rounded.
Though the process is natural and seemingly unavoidable, genetics does seem to play a part in how, when, and where the changes most obviously take place. Also, environmental factors that damage the skin—such as exposure to ultraviolet radiation, smoking, and air pollution—hasten the destruction of collagen and more. Sooner or later, the breakdown outpaces the body’s ability to replace what’s lost.

Your Voluma® XC Treatment
To begin your VOLUMA® XC treatment at our Los Angeles area practice, Dr. Jones will clean the area to be treated and may apply an anesthetic to ensure the most comfortable treatment possible.
Treatment with VOLUMA® XC is similar to other hyaluronic acid fillers, and the formulation contains lidocaine anesthetic which takes effect immediately making discomfort minimal. Just like other injectable fillers, VOLUMA® XC is injected into the areas of the face that lack volume. While some may experience minor swelling or bruising around the injection sites, this will subside quickly. Treatment time is approximately 30 minutes, and patients are free to return to their normal activities immediately after treatment.
Following the procedure, your physician may massage the treatment sites to make sure VOLUMA® XC is properly distributed and the results are even. Before you leave, Dr. Jones may apply ice to your treatment sites for at least 10 minutes to help minimize swelling, inflammation, and bruising. Rare bruising may be treated with the V-Beam laser with overnight resolution.

More Fillers In The Voluma® XC Family And Beyond
Allergan, maker of VOLUMA® XC, also offers other fillers in the JUVÉDERM® line, including ULTRA®, ULTRA® PLUS, and VOLLURE™ XC.
ULTRA® is designed with softer results in mind and is especially suited for gently augmenting the lips and addressing moderate folds around the mouth. Results typically last nine months to a year.
ULTRA® PLUS is a thicker gel intended for deeper nasolabial folds and similar lines, offering correction shown to last for up to a year.
Similar to ULTRA®, VOLLURE™ XC is designed for smoothing out lines around the mouth, but is formulated to generate results that last for up to two years.
Aside from VOLUMA® XC and the other fillers in the JUVÉDERM® family, there is also the hyaluronic acid-based RESTYLANE® for treating smile lines, marionette lines, and folds around the mouth; BELOTERO® for smoothing out fine lines; and RADIESSE®, which is unique in that it uses a water-based gel filled with incredibly tiny spheres made of calcium. This filler works by creating a framework on which new collagen can grow, naturally increasing volume in the treatment area.
Though fillers are ideal for adding volume lost due to diminished levels of hyaluronic acid and collagen in the skin, not all wrinkles form due to that aspect of the aging process. For wrinkles and lines that appear as the result of repeated muscle contractions, there is BOTOX® Cosmetic, an injectable form of botulinum toxin type A that limits muscle activity. When the targeted muscles stay at rest, they no longer pull the skin into obvious folds or lines.
No patient is expected to come into the office knowing which dermal filler or other treatment would be right for him or her. The physicians on the team are experienced in approaching each patient as a unique individual and will make assessments of the current state of the skin and face, then develop a plan best suited to helping each person achieve their cosmetic goals. The recommended treatment may involve just one dermal filler, such as VOLUMA® XC, or it may include multiple different injectables, with effects that will combine to revitalize and rejuvenate the entire face.
