People who administer BOTOX® in Beverly Hills and beyond must be trained and certified, and while that process adds a level of accountability, it is also open to a variety of medical professionals. You may have heard that even some dentists are offering BOTOX® injections, which goes to show that just because some people can technically deliver BOTOX® to patients, that doesn’t mean they should. Though only trained professionals are allowed to administer BOTOX®, remember that being trained does not mean the same thing as having experience.

Do not settle for learning only who can legally provide BOTOX® injections, but ask about a medical professional’s credentials, history with the cosmetic, and approach to facial aesthetics. Our team has performed tens of thousands of injections and our shared experience includes participation in a scientific investigation that led to the FDA’s approval of BOTOX® for treating crow’s feet, making him a top provider.

Choosing an experienced provider means you will be working with a doctor who understands recommended dosages, the importance of obtaining complete and accurate patient histories, and other factors that minimize risk of complications.

Our Team Of Physician Injectors Are Trained In slow And Sophisticated Injection Techniques which Make Your Treatments Relatively Painless.

1. BOTOX® Basics: What Causes Wrinkles?

Wrinkles can make the face appear older, but they aren’t caused by age alone. Factors like sun exposure, harsh environmental conditions, stress, poor sleep, and inadequate nutrition all contribute to the development of lines and folds—often making people look older than they actually are.

Many people ask, “Does BOTOX® help wrinkles?” The answer is yes—but specifically for a certain type. There are two main categories of wrinkles: dynamic and static. Dynamic wrinkles form due to repeated facial movements such as smiling, frowning, squinting, or raising the eyebrows. Over time, these constant muscle contractions create visible lines in areas like the forehead, around the eyes (crow’s feet), and between the brows. Static wrinkles, on the other hand, are present even when the face is at rest and typically result from aging, sun damage, and the breakdown of collagen and elastin.

So, which wrinkles does BOTOX® treat? BOTOX® is specifically designed for dynamic wrinkles. It works by temporarily relaxing the muscles responsible for facial expressions, preventing them from contracting and forming lines. This not only softens the appearance of existing wrinkles but can also help prevent new ones from developing, leading to a smoother, more refreshed look.

While surgical procedures can also target wrinkles by tightening skin, removing tissue, or repositioning facial structures, they are invasive, involve recovery time, and may leave scars. BOTOX®, in contrast, requires only a few quick injections, with no downtime. Though its effects are temporary, treatment can be safely repeated as needed to maintain a youthful appearance.

2. How Does BOTOX® Cosmetic Work?

Nerve SignalFigure 1 – Nerves signal muscles to contract which then create wrinkles and folds on the surface of the skin.

Nerve SignalFigure 2 – BOTOX® works locally to temporarily block movement signals to specific muscles where it is injected.

BOTOX® is a highly safe prescription medication that was first approved by the FDA nearly 25 years ago and has since become one of the most popular injectable treatments available. Many people ask, “What is BOTOX® used for?” It’s most commonly used to smooth out frown lines and wrinkles in the upper face, particularly the moderate to severe lines that form between the eyebrows.

Another frequent question is, “What is BOTOX® made of?” BOTOX® is derived from a purified form of botulinum toxin type A. When used in small, controlled doses, it temporarily relaxes targeted facial muscles, helping to reduce the appearance of dynamic wrinkles caused by repeated expressions. This makes BOTOX® Cosmetic a trusted and effective option for those looking to achieve a more revitalized and youthful look without surgery.

As one of the leading non-surgical treatments available, BOTOX® Cosmetic effectively targets dynamic wrinkles—the lines formed by repeated facial movements like frowning or squinting—by temporarily relaxing the underlying muscles. The procedure is quick, and our Los Angeles BOTOX® Cosmetic patients can return to their regular activities right after their appointment. Within about a week, most patients begin to notice a more refreshed and youthful-looking complexion.

The effects of BOTOX® Cosmetic typically last up to four months. To maintain these results, follow-up treatments can be scheduled as needed. While the results won’t last forever, BOTOX® Cosmetic offers a fast, convenient, and non-invasive way to refresh your appearance and reduce visible signs of aging.

Other Wrinkle Relaxers

Our expert team offers a range of injectable neuromodulators—Dysport®, Xeomin®, Jeuveau™, and Daxxify™—that work similarly to BOTOX® Cosmetic by temporarily relaxing facial muscles to reduce the appearance of dynamic wrinkles. Each of these treatments has unique characteristics that may make them more suitable for certain individuals or areas of the face.

  • Dysport® is known for its ability to spread more easily across treated areas, making it particularly effective for larger regions like the forehead. Patients often notice results within 2–5 days, and the effects can last approximately 3–4 months.
  • Xeomin®, often referred to as “naked BOTOX®,” is unique in that it contains no accessory proteins, potentially reducing the risk of developing resistance over time. This purity may make it a preferable option for patients who have developed resistance to other botulinum toxins.
  • Jeuveau™, marketed as a more affordable alternative to BOTOX®, offers similar results with a comparable duration of effect. Some patients report a faster onset of action compared to other injectables.
  • Daxxify™ is the newest addition to the neuromodulator family, offering results that can last up to six months or more due to its unique peptide stabilizer. This extended duration may appeal to patients seeking longer-lasting results.

Choosing the right injectable neuromodulator depends on individual preferences, treatment areas, and desired outcomes. Our team of Cosmetic Fellowship-Trained, Board-Certified Dermatologists will work closely with you to determine which option best aligns with your aesthetic goals.

3. Who is an Ideal Candidate for BOTOX®?

Who should get BOTOX®? Generally, most adults—both women and men—looking to treat frown lines or crow’s feet are good candidates for BOTOX® Cosmetic, though there are some important considerations and limitations.

Who is a good candidate for BOTOX®? According to the manufacturer Allergan, BOTOX® for frown lines is recommended for adults under the age of 65. Ideal candidates are those in good overall health without allergies to any ingredients in botulinum toxin injectables. People who have received any botulinum toxin treatment within the past four months should wait before getting another injection.

Certain groups should take extra precautions or avoid treatment altogether. Pregnant or breastfeeding women, as well as those planning to become pregnant soon, should inform their doctor before proceeding. Additionally, individuals with upcoming surgery, urinary tract infections, or a history of bleeding disorders need to discuss these factors with their physician.

Beyond these guidelines, a good candidate is someone who has realistic expectations about the results and is seeking a non-surgical, minimally invasive way to reduce dynamic wrinkles caused by facial expressions. Because a patient’s medical history plays a crucial role in determining safety and suitability, a thorough consultation is an essential part of the process before any treatment begins.

4. Which Areas Can Be Treated with BOTOX®?

Through precise injections, this injectable temporarily relaxes the underlying muscles to reduce wrinkles and fine lines that develop over time, including frown and forehead lines, crow’s feet, neck wrinkles, and platysma bands. This treatment helps Beverly Hills women and men target:

  • Horizontal forehead creases
  • Lines between the eyebrows and above the bridge of the nose
  • Crow’s feet, or lines at the corners of the eyes
  • Platysma bands, the vertical neck bands that can become more prominent with age
Nerve Signal
Figure 2 – As advanced injectors of BOTOX®, we are able to treat many other areas of the face and neck.

The effectiveness of this injectable treatment relies on precise application. To treat frown lines, we target two specific forehead muscles: the procerus and the corrugator. This involves five injections arranged in a rough V-shape that follows the inward curve of the eyebrows.

For crow’s feet, we administer three injections on the outer side of each eye, totaling six injections. These are placed into the orbicularis oculi muscle, creating a sideways V pattern. Occasionally, BOTOX® Cosmetic can also be used to relax lower facial muscles to reduce wrinkles around the mouth. Consult with our physicians to determine if this treatment is right for you.

Dr. Derek H. Jones is a national expert on the subject of BOTOX. Los Angeles-area patients seek him out for his experience with the cosmetic and extensive knowledge of facial anatomy.
When it comes to BOTOX®, our Los Angeles-area Board-Certified and Cosmetic Fellowship- Trained Dermatologists use the injectable cosmetic to address a variety of wrinkles caused by repetitive movements. Its primary cosmetic use is to relax muscles that cause forehead lines and crow’s feet. Our team will make BOTOX® injections into the left and right corrugator supercilii (2), as well as the procerus (3), to smooth out unwanted frown lines that form between the brows. Patients seeking to temporarily reduce the appearance of crow’s feet will receive BOTOX® injections in the muscles to either side of the eye, known as the orbicularis oculi (14). Beyond these explicitly FDA-approved applications, BOTOX® can provide a lip lift when injected into the depressor angulioris (S), soften a jawline by relaxing the masseter muscles (17), stop a smile that reveals an excess of upper gums by acting on the levatorlabiisuperiorisalaequenasi (15) and other muscles that control smiling, and provide more benefits as desired. Our Board-Certified Physicians’ intimate knowledge of the complex anatomy of the face is key to ensuring both aesthetically effective and safe results for patients coming to our practice: Skin Care and Laser Physicians of Beverly Hills.

5. How Do You Prepare for BOTOX®?

Preparing for your treatment is simple but important to ensure the best results and minimize any potential side effects. In the days leading up to your appointment, avoid blood-thinning medications and supplements such as aspirin, ibuprofen, vitamin E, and fish oil, as these can increase the risk of bruising. Refrain from alcohol for at least 24 hours before your session. Let your provider know about any medications you’re taking and any medical conditions you have. On the day of treatment, arrive with a clean face—free of makeup, lotions, or skincare products—to help reduce the risk of irritation or infection.

6. What is the Procedure for BOTOX®?

What can you expect during a BOTOX® treatment? How uncomfortable is BOTOX®? When you visit our Beverly Hills office, the injections are done with a very fine needle, making the procedure virtually painless. To help minimize any discomfort, a topical numbing cream and cold compress may be applied beforehand.

You can typically see results within three days, lasting up to four months. The treatment takes about 15 minutes and is easy to tolerate. Afterward, mild redness and swelling may occur but usually fade within a few hours. Patients who maintain regular treatments often find they can lengthen the time between sessions.

Despite some misconceptions, BOTOX® Cosmetic from our Beverly Hills and Los Angeles practice won’t prevent you from frowning or expressing emotions. Thanks to the skill of our experienced physician injectors, you’ll look naturally refreshed—not “frozen.”

7. How Long Will It Take to See Results from BOTOX®?

Many patients in the Los Angeles area often notice results from their injections quite quickly, but how soon do you notice BOTOX results? While the treatment begins working almost right away by reducing muscle activity in the targeted areas, it doesn’t produce its full effects right away. This is because neuromodulators work by blocking nerve signals to the muscles, which takes some time to fully take effect.

Typically, you may start to see subtle improvements within the first 24 to 48 hours after your injections. However, the optimal results usually develop more gradually, becoming more noticeable around three to four days post-treatment. The full, peak effect generally appears after about one week.

Several factors can influence how quickly a botulinum toxin injectable works for each individual. These include the specific area being treated, the amount of product used, the strength and activity level of the muscles, as well as each person’s unique metabolism and how their body processes the medication. Additionally, lifestyle factors such as age, skin condition, and overall health may also impact the speed and longevity of results.

Understanding this timeline can help manage expectations and ensure you appreciate the gradual, natural-looking improvement this treatment provides over the course of the first week.

8. What is the Aftercare for BOTOX®?

BOTOX® is a minimally invasive cosmetic, so patients receiving injections of it should experience little to no downtime afterward. It is important to avoid applying pressure to the injection area for about 24 hours, which includes not massaging it, to help ensure that the cosmetic doesn’t migrate elsewhere.

Patients can also keep any slight bruising to a minimum by keeping their blood pressure low for several hours after the injections. This includes staying away from strenuous exercise, saunas or hot tubs, and tanning sessions.

To help the cosmetic properly work its way into the treated muscles, patients are encouraged to exercise those specific muscles in the hour after the treatment.

9. How Long will BOTOX® Results Last?

One of the most common questions patients have is how long the effects of BOTOX® last. In general, most people can expect their results to remain visible for about three to four months. However, this can vary based on individual factors such as the area treated, muscle strength, metabolism, and how regularly the patient receives injections. In some cases, results may last up to five or six months.

Rather than disappearing all at once, the effects wear off gradually. Muscle movement slowly returns to the treated areas—like the forehead or around the eyes—so patients won’t suddenly see wrinkles reappear overnight. Instead, they may notice a gradual increase in facial movement over time. This slow return allows for a natural-looking transition and gives patients the option to schedule maintenance treatments before lines fully come back.

10. How Do You Maintain the Best Results from BOTOX®?

A follow-up treatment after about four months can help maintain and restore the desired smoothing effects. In fact, studies and clinical experience suggest that regular, repeated injections can lead to even better results over time. This is because the targeted muscles gradually adapt to being in a relaxed state, which helps reduce their activity and the depth of wrinkles. With consistent treatments, many patients notice that their muscles become “trained” to stay more relaxed, potentially extending the longevity of results and even reducing the amount of product needed over time.

To preserve your best results, it’s important to follow a few key tips. First, maintain a consistent skincare routine that includes daily use of sunscreen, as sun exposure can break down collagen and worsen the appearance of fine lines. Follow all aftercare guidelines provided by your injector, such as avoiding strenuous activity, rubbing the treated areas, or lying down for several hours after your appointment. Additionally, consider complementary treatments like dermal fillers, chemical peels, or facials, which can enhance and prolong the youthful appearance achieved with BOTOX®. Staying well- hydrated, managing stress, and getting enough sleep also support healthy, glowing skin.

11. Are There Any Risks and Complications Associated with BOTOX®?

While BOTOX® is approved by the FDA for treating frown lines and crow’s feet, there is a risk of side effects, as with all treatments and procedures. Reported allergic reactions have included itching, redness, rashes, dizziness, and wheezing or asthma-like symptoms.

It is technically possible for the cosmetic’s effects to spread to other areas of the body, though there has never been a confirmed case of such a serious side effect in relation to the proper use of this medicine in treating frown lines and crow’s feet. Still, in the hours, days, and weeks following an injection, you should seek medical help if you develop difficulty swallowing, speaking, or breathing, or you experience overall muscle weakness, vision problems, voice changes, or loss of bladder control.

Known mild side effects include dry mouth or eyes, injection-site discomfort or pain, headache, and drooping or swelling eyelids.

12. How Do I Get Started With BOTOX® At Skin Care and Laser Physicians of Beverly Hills?

With noticeable results, no surgery and no recovery time, there are many reasons to get started today. Our Board-Certified and Cosmetic Fellowship-Trained Dermatologists are happy to answer questions about BOTOX® in Los Angeles or go over any of the information presented here in more detail.

Since every person is different, a personal consultation is the best way to determine whether this would be the most effective treatment, how it should be applied, and if there are other treatments that may complement the effects of BOTOX® to provide an overall balanced, natural, healthy-looking, and youthful appearance

13. What Are Some Alternatives or Complementary Options for BOTOX®?

Many women and men who come to our practice like to combine their BOTOX® Cosmetic treatment with another facial enhancement procedure such as dermal fillers, IPL or laser skin resurfacing. While Botox® is highly effective at reducing dynamic wrinkles caused by facial movement, combining it with other cosmetic treatments can enhance and extend your overall results. Dermal fillers, for example, can restore lost volume in areas like the cheeks, lips, and nasolabial folds—complementing BOTOX® by addressing static wrinkles and facial hollowness. Chemical peels or laser treatments improve skin tone, texture, and pigmentation, creating a smoother, more radiant complexion. Microneedling and collagen induction therapy and medical-grade facials can boost collagen production and further refine the skin’s appearance. Together, these treatments can provide a more comprehensive, youthful look that goes beyond what BOTOX® alone can achieve. If you are considering a comprehensive makeover, Skin Care and Laser Physicians of Beverly Hills can help provide you with a look you’ll love.
