4 Things No One Tells You About BOTOX®
Are you curious about what to expect when you get BOTOX®? Our Los Angeles-based Skin Care and Laser Physicians of Beverly Hills team has plenty of experience with the neuromodulator, but understands that patients want to know what happens before and during the session, what to expect afterward, and how they’ll feel when they have this minimally invasive injectable treatment.
If you’re preparing for BOTOX®, check out four of the top things you should know before your appointment.
It Doesn’t Work Right Away
If you try to make facial expressions in the mirror just hours after your treatment, or you aren’t getting the look you want, don’t panic. It takes a few days for the medication to start working, and between 10 to 14 days for the maximum effects of the injectable to kick in. Different facial muscles can react to the neurotoxin at different times, causing unexpected initial results—but wait to see if your opinion changes at the end of two weeks.
It Could Feel a Little Odd at First
Although BOTOX® generally isn’t painful, patients often say they feel a sort of dullness or heaviness after their injections. It’s totally normally to feel a little “weird” at first, and it can take time to get used to the fact that some of your muscles no longer contract the way they did before.
It’s Not the Same Thing as Filler
Fillers and neuromodulators both target wrinkles, but they’re completely different treatments. The general rule is that BOTOX® is for the wrinkles you get because of repetitive muscle contractions during facial expressions, while fillers are for creases and contour changes that are linked to volume loss. Fillers are gel-like substances, not toxins.
You Should Take a “Less Is More” Approach to Neurotoxins
It’s important to know when enough is enough when it comes to this treatment. Getting more BOTOX® won’t necessarily give you better results. You want to preserve some movement and natural-looking facial expressions rather than completely freezing the face. Start slow and avoid over-treating the face. The best way to do this is to work with a trusted and experienced dermatologist.
